FAQs

How does using my HSA and FSA account save me money?

HSA and FSA accounts were created so individuals could use pre-tax money to pay for expenses used to treat, mitigate, or prevent a diagnosed medical condition. Because HSA and FSA stores use pre-tax money, you’re getting more purchasing power for your dollars. Rather than pay taxes on income and then spend it on qualified items, customers can use pre-tax funds to directly invest in their health.

An individual can contribute up to $4,150 pretax to their HSA limits per year, or $8,300 for a family (plus an additional $1,000 if you are at least 55 years old. Individuals can contribute up to $3,200 pretax to their FSA limits per year (with an additional $500 in employer contributions allowed).

What are HSA and FSA accounts?

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are programs that allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible healthcare expenses.

Health Savings Account (HSA) is a personal savings account that allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars for qualified medical expenses. To open one, you must be enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). Key advantages include:

  • Tax savings: Contributions are tax-deductible, and withdrawals for eligible expenses are tax-free.
  • Rollover: Funds don’t expire; unused balances roll over year to year.
  • Portability: The account is yours, even if you change jobs.
  • Investment potential: Many HSA administrators allow you to invest unused funds for long-term growth.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is a savings account that lets you set aside pre-tax money for eligible expenses, similar to Health Savings Accounts, but with some important differences (FSA vs HSA):

  • Employer-owned: FSAs are tied to your job; if you leave, the account doesn’t follow you.
  • Use-it-or-lose-it rule: Most FSAs require you to use your funds within the plan year, although some offer a grace period or allow a small amount of rollover.
  • Immediate access: Unlike HSAs, FSAs give you access to your full annual election amount at the start of the plan year.

If you’re unsure whether or not you have an HSA vs FSA account, please check with your employer or insurance company.

Can I use my HSA/FSA at Rest?

Yes, simply select Truemed as your payment option at checkout and use your HSA or FSA card as you would any other credit card.

However, to qualify using your HSA or FSA on bedding, a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is required. If a healthcare provider determines that specialty bedding like Rest's cooling bedding are medically necessary to treat a diagnosed condition, it can become eligible.

How do I use my HSA/FSA for Rest?

Rest has partnered with Truemed to qualify for HSA/FSA. If you would like to use your HSA/FSA for Rest bedding, here’s what to do:

  1. On the checkout page, select "Truemed - Pay with HSA/FSA" as your payment method.
  2. You will be guided through a HIPAA-compliant medical survey (~60 seconds).
  3. The survey is reviewed by a licensed clinician.
  4. If approved, Truemed:
    • Issues a Letter of Medical Necessity
    • Enables payment with your HSA/FSA card

Note: Select Rest bedding are HSA / FSA eligible items, but there are two cases in which a customer can be denied:

  • The reviewing clinician determines it is not medically necessary.
  • Your HSA/FSA plan administrator audits the claim and deems the item “primarily personal.” (Rare when LMN is on file.)

Can I use my regular credit card at checkout?

Yes. If you prefer to use your regular credit card, Truemed will send you instructions on how to submit for reimbursement from your HSA/FSA administrator. However, to minimize being misled into purchasing without reimbursement, we suggest using your HSA/FSA card directly as some administrators may decline certain categories at their discretion. Alternatively, you can reach out to your administrator to confirm eligibility.

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity, and how is this compliant?

A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is a written statement from your healthcare provider that explains why a product or service is necessary for the treatment of your condition.

What a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) typically includes:

  • Patient’s name
  • Diagnosis or medical condition
  • Recommended product (e.g., cooling bedding)
  • Explanation of how the product will help manage the condition
  • Provider’s signature and credentials

Why it matters:

  • Without an LMN, bedding purchases will almost always be denied.
  • With one, you can use HSA/FSA funds at checkout or request reimbursement.

Tip: Many HSA/FSA administrators provide downloadable LMN forms. Ask your doctor to complete the form and keep it on file when submitting claims.

The items in your Truemed Letter of Medical Necessity (“LMN”) could now become qualified medical expenses in the same way a visit to the doctor’s office or pharmaceutical product is.

Your Truemed LMN satisfies all IRS requirements to make your wellness spend fully reimbursable. This is a common requirement for many wellness-related products, which can be made reimbursable through HSA or FSA funds when a medical professional deems them necessary for a patient's health.

Are there fees associated with using Truemed's services?

There is no cost to you, as long as you are shopping with a Truemed partner merchant.

When should I use my FSA/HSA dollars?

You can use your FSA/HSA dollars all year long. However, FSA dollars expire at the end of the year and unused money may not rollover into the next year. Make sure to spend the rest of your FSA dollars before December 31st — use it, so you don’t lose it!

How long does it take for me to receive my Letter of Medical Necessity?

Generally it takes 24-48 hours. In some cases, Truemed’s provider team will require additional time to issue a letter of medical necessity based on the needs associated with an individual qualification survey. If you aren’t seeing your letter in your inbox, check spam, then reach out to us at [email protected] for help.
